Large-Format Kitchen Floor in Centennial

Spacious galley kitchen with large-format cream porcelain floor tiles and wood upper cabinets in Centennial CO

About This Project

A Centennial homeowner in the Homestead Farm area had a galley kitchen with original 12x12 ceramic tile that had developed cracked grout joints throughout. The floor needed a full replacement rather than a repair. The homeowners chose a 24x24 cream porcelain with a subtle variation in the surface that gives it a natural stone quality without the maintenance demands of actual stone.

The galley format is unforgiving for tile layout because both long walls are visible simultaneously. We set the layout so the tile joints fall centered in the walkway between the counters, with equal cuts on both sides. This required removing some of the existing cabinet toe kicks temporarily to get a tile edge that reads cleanly rather than ending with a sliver cut at the base of the cabinetry.

The thin grout joint at 1/16 inch in a matching cream color makes the floor read almost seamless. This approach emphasizes the size of the tile and makes the kitchen feel wider than the actual footprint.
