Fish Scale Mosaic Accent Wall in Centennial

Teal fish-scale mosaic accent wall tiles beside white toilet and light blue vanity in a Centennial CO bathroom

About This Project

A Centennial homeowner wanted the toilet wall of a guest bathroom to be a focal point. The tile is a glass fish-scale mosaic in a graduated teal-to-slate color blend. The sheets are mesh-backed, which allows for relatively fast installation, but the scale shape requires careful attention to how sheets align at the seams. The curved tops of each scale need to interlock precisely with the scale shapes on the adjacent sheet or the graduation pattern breaks and the seam becomes visible.

We laid out the center of the wall first, confirmed the sheet-to-sheet alignment across the full width dry before committing to mortar, and used a non-sag white thin-set to prevent the mesh-backed sheets from slipping on a vertical surface during cure time. The grout is a very light gray to soften the contrast between the glass tiles without disappearing entirely.

This guest bathroom is in a Piney Creek subdivision home in Centennial. The wall height allowed for full sheets from floor to ceiling with a single cut course at the top.

What We Did

  1. Measured and centered the layout on the wall, dry-laid sheets across the full width to verify seam alignment
  2. Back-buttered each mesh sheet with non-sag white thin-set and applied a skim coat to the wall for full coverage
  3. Set sheets from the bottom course up, pressing firmly at each seam to ensure the scale interlocks match
  4. Applied light gray unsanded grout with a float, cleaned residue before cure, and sealed the grout joints
