Dark Marble Shower Surround in Littleton
About This Project
A Littleton homeowner wanted a primary bathroom that read dramatically different from the builder-grade white tile it replaced. The wall material is a large-format dark marble-look porcelain in a 24x48 inch format, installed floor to ceiling on all shower walls and continuing onto the main bathroom wall behind the vanity for visual continuity.
Large-format dark tile shows every imperfection in the substrate and every variation in the grout joint. Achieving a flat result requires back-buttering each tile individually and checking for lippage after every course. We used a 1/2 inch V-notch trowel and a large-format tile leveling system to keep the grout joints even and the plane flat across the full wall height.
The tile continues through a Littleton home that was built in the late 1990s near Governors Ranch. The existing cement board was in good condition and only minor spot repairs were needed before applying the Kerdi sheet membrane for waterproofing.
