Large-Format Stone Hallway Floor in Littleton
About This Project
This hallway floor in a Littleton home near the Centennial Acres neighborhood replaced worn carpet that had been in place since the original construction. The tile is a 24x24 gray stone-look matte porcelain with subtle surface variation that reads as natural stone from a distance but performs far better underfoot in a high-traffic corridor.
The hallway connects the entry to the kitchen and living areas, meaning it sees more daily foot traffic than almost any other surface in the house. We used a large-format tile leveling system during installation to prevent any lippage between tiles, which is especially noticeable on larger formats in a long linear space. Even a small height difference between adjacent tiles catches the light and shadows in a hallway where the floor is seen at a low angle.
The slab in this home had a 3/8 inch variation over the hallway length. We applied floor leveling compound in two passes before tile could go down, bringing the surface within 1/8 inch over a 10-foot span as required by the tile manufacturer's installation guidelines.
